Government hastens dismantling to give way to rehabilitation.

{reg} Government officials of Torrent Valencia recently called for the dismantling of a closed Cemex quarry in Serra Perenxisa to give way to immediate rehabilitations.

According to a report by La Opinion de Torrent, the quarry that has been closed for 40 years got the attention of Mayor Jose Maria Castellano, who visited it with environment councilor, Jose Gozalvo.

The mayor said that the restoration of the site would begin immediately after the removal of the quarry. The group in charge of the restoration, the Participation Council, would be composed of environmentalists, hunters, residents and farmers directly involved to the area.

According to Par Socialist spokesman Jose Veiga, Torrent should benefit from the rehabilitation of the area. He told the publication that the regeneration of the land will generate significant economic benefits that have to be used for the city itself.

According to reports the city came into agreement in February 2006 with Cemex to cease quarry activity in 2008 or, at worst, in 2010, with no possibility of extension. {reg/}
