Protecting domestic market amid EU decision

Hungary plans to keep its ban on Ukrainian grain imports, even after an EU decision. Starting September 16, Hungary will close its borders to certain Ukrainian grain products.

Hungary's Agriculture Minister, István Nagy, has expressed that if the EU doesn't extend its ban on some Ukrainian grain imports (which expires on September 15), Hungary will introduce its own ban to safeguard its domestic market.

Minister Nagy cited the influx of low-cost Ukrainian agricultural products into the EU market as a challenge for local producers. He noted that despite a potentially record-breaking corn harvest this year, competition from cheaper imports has made sales difficult.

This decision underscores Hungary's dedication to supporting its agricultural sector and ensuring fair competition for its farmers. It reflects concerns about the impact of inexpensive imports on the country's domestic market.

The situation highlights the intricate balance between EU member states' individual agricultural interests and broader EU trade policies.
