For over a decade, Mexican-based global cement manufacturer CEMEX has led the charge for cleaner energy and alternative fuels in the industry. CemWeek touched base with Dr. Luis Farias, VP for Energy and Sustainability at CEMEX, about the company's achievements and the role it is playing in the industry's future development of clean energy.

CW: CEMEX has been a pioneer in the use of clean energy and alternative fuels for over a decade. Can you elaborate on some of the more notable initiatives undertaken?

FARIAS: If we go back further than a decade, to the early nineties, we recognized that petroleum coke ÔÇö then considered as a low-value residue of the refining industry and mostly untapped in the Americas ÔÇö could replace fuel oil and coal in our cement kilns.
