With production volumes softening and plants manufacturing below design capacities in many parts of the world, fuel cost reductions and efficient plant operations are paramount. However, as Tahir Abbas from Cinar explains, it is a tall order to set up a production system to fully draw upon the benefits of alternative fuels and employ the appropriate implementation strategy. Therefore simple and low-cost solutions may be implemented during the interim period, through advance model based techniques, i.e., MI-CFD.

This technical review highlights some of the considerations and trends in calciner design. Tahir further explains the benefits of employing advanced mineral-interactive computational fluid dynamics (MI-CFD) in optimizing plant efficiency and delves into a brief case study on the topic.
