In the US, coal has long figured centrally as a source of fuel for the cement sector. But a structural decline in natural gas prices is accelerating the attractiveness for cement operations to switch from coal to natural gas. Natural Gas Prices - From 2004 to 2008, coal was highly competitive as an alternative to gas, with prices ranging between US$1.5/MMBTU to almost US$3/MMBTU versus gas prices that hovered around US$6/MMBTU, but spiked in 2005 caused by major disruptions related to hurricane Katrina.
