They are replacing conventional plastic mulch film with Advantage Kraft Mulch, a sustainable paper alternative that protects crops without harming the environment. Traditionally, mulching films shield crops from birds, weeds, erosion, and the elements but are made from plastic, leading to disposal challenges. Advantage Kraft Mulch is the answer: crafted entirely from responsibly sourced wood, this 100 percent kraft paper solution is free from plastic or coating. Certified as industrially compostable according to DIN EN 13432, it offers the same level of protection as plastic mulch film. Initial field trials are promising. This kraft paper remains robust, preventing weed growth, and decomposes naturally after harvest, leaving no traces. It enriches the soil with organic matter, eliminating the need for disposal or recycling, thus reducing waste and cost. Unlike traditional plastic mulch, there is no risk of microplastics infiltrating the soil. This innovation is suitable for both greenhouse and outdoor agricultural applications, secured to the ground with wooden clips and featuring easy customization for plant growth. Lasse Berglund, Business Development Manager Kraft Paper at Mondi, emphasizes the environmental benefits: "Advantage Kraft Mulch eliminates unnecessary plastic, adds organic matter to the soil, and requires no disposal or recycling infrastructure." Rui Marques, Manager Industry and Agrotextiles Division at Cotesi, notes the positive impact on agriculture: "Farmers are dedicated to protecting their nutritious soil and preventing pollution through microplastics migration. Working closely with Mondi, we've made farming more sustainable." Mondi and Cotesi's collaboration showcases a sustainable solution that enhances crop growth while safeguarding the environment.
